About På Torvet – rooms and café in Ærøskøbing

Life on the town square in Ærøskøbing

På Torvet is a small place with rooms and a café – right on the town square in Ærøskøbing. A relaxed and informal setting where town life, history and everyday calm meet – and where both locals and visitors naturally stop by.

The place and the idea

We offer accommodation in Ærøskøbing in cosy rooms and a café focused on lunch and light meals. På Torvet is not a traditional hotel or a classic restaurant, but a small place on an island where the seasons, the setting and everyday life set the pace.

Apartment and living space at På Torvet

Rooms and apartments – each with its own character

As a small place on Ærø, operations are naturally seasonal. The size of the island and the small local community mean that service and culture differ from the mainland.

There is more room for flexibility, personal contact and a more informal approach to both guests and daily operations.

As part of our seasonal operation, we work with a smaller team that changes throughout the year.

The buildings and the history

På Torvet is located in the Old Town School – the distinctive yellow building facing the square in Ærøskøbing. Today, the building houses both the café and apartments, but over time it has served different purposes and been an active part of the town’s life.

The courtyard – a calm outdoor space behind the building

Behind the building is a cosy courtyard. From here, there is access to the former lantern factory, where ship lanterns were historically produced for Danish shipping, including Maersk.

Together, the buildings tell the story of a place rooted in community, craftsmanship and maritime life, which has shaped Ærø over generations.

Ærø, Ærøskøbing and our guests

Ærøskøbing is known as one of Denmark’s best-preserved historic towns and attracts visitors from Denmark and abroad each year. The cobbled streets, colourful houses and lively atmosphere form the setting for a town that is also everyday life for a small local community.

The island’s history of seafaring, trade and later tourism is closely connected to this place on the square. In recent years, Ærø has also attracted many wedding guests and culturally curious travellers, many of whom return.

At På Torvet, we welcome holiday guests, short stays and travellers exploring Ærø as part of a longer journey.

The place today

Today, På Torvet is run as a small, cohesive place where accommodation and café naturally go hand in hand. The place is continuously adapted to the seasons, the weather and the rhythm of island life.

The ambition is not to be large or the same all year round, but to create surroundings that feel calm, welcoming and genuine – both for guests and for those who work here.

About us

Behind På Torvet are Troels and Søren. We took over the place in March 2025 and moved to Ærø in connection with this.

We run the place with a focus on what is close at hand – in the way we meet guests, in daily life, and in how the place develops over time.

We are also open to the possibility that På Torvet may at some point be continued by others, should the right match arise.

Next chapter

After developing the place, we see it as a natural opportunity to pass it on to new hands.
